A couple of weeks ago my brother in law experianced an electrical fire that started somewhere near the battery. It's (I think) a 71. with a 390. The fire burned and smoked for about 15 minutes. It was put out by the fire dept. My question is, is the motor it self any good? I know I will have to replace a few things (like the ignition system and carb) But could the fire itself damaged the motor at all? He's giving it to me so I would like to get some info as to wether it is salvageable. I have more pics in my gallery.
should be okay... pull the plugs before you turn it over cause its a guaranteed certainty that it's full of water.. drain the oil also... should be alright.. i've caught my old fords on fire before and thats all I ever did... well, that and rewire it all... LOL
If the fire department put it out, they used either water or foam. They rarely, if ever use dry chem except in a house with a stove or oven fire. Our engine only has on dru chem extinguisher onboard.
Call the fire boys and ask them what to use to clean it off. The last foam I was involved with had a solvent of it own. I have been fire fighting for over 10 years now but I do know they have a new type foam (the wife is still a fire commissioner and I remember talking about the new stuff being cheaper, working better and easier to clean up. So the new stuff may well just use water.
