Steering Gear Lubricant

I couldn't find what weight of gear oil to use in my steering gearbox. What should I use? Also, how does the screw and backing nut on the top of the box "tighten" the slack out of the box?

Hey 72, I have a 1960 F-350, and used 85W-90 gear oil in my steering box, but consult your shop manual to be sure. Also, on the steering box, loosen the locknut, and turn the adjusting screw either clockwise or counter clockwise a little at a time to adjust the "freeplay". This will move the sector shaft closer or farther from the worm gear to decrease/increase freeplay. hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply. The reason I asked about the lubricant was because I could see a grease (tie rod end or king pin grease) substance in the box. I'll go with the 80w-90.

Thanks again
