Well found a replacement for the broken 400 in my 79 250. Was wondering if anyone could tell me more about the numbers. I know it's a 1971 block and 73 heads but can anyone tell me more.
block: DIVE-A2B
Heads: D3VE-A2A
Can I modify the 400 mounts or will I need to get some L&L mounts and headers?
Thanks
Don't believe the stories about having to have early heads to make any power, the D3VE heads, that are very comparable to the early heads like within 10cfm difference max across the board at all lifts, and at higher lifts on the valves the D3 can actually outflow the early castings. The ONLY advantage the early casting have over the D3VE casting numbers is, they have a smaller compustion chamber, ok thats great but how much over 10:1 compression do you want, which is possible real easy with the D3VE castings. Let other people pay too much money for early casting number heads, save your money and use the late heads.
Thoses casting numbers you gave indicate anywhere from 73-78 engine, yes you will need different motor mounts. If you are going through the engine I would do some port work on the exhaust ports atleast, ALL the 385 series heads have bad exhaust flow that is why they like cams with 10degs more exhaust duration than intake.
For those that don't believe me about the early vs late casting flow numbers, maybe you will believe one of the best head porters around Scott aka the mad porter. to look at his data showing results on his flow bench comparing different heads click HERE

Thanks for the replies! Glad to hear the heads are decent and compair well to the early ones. The tags do verify it is from a 1973 lincoln.
Can't wait to start tearing it apart From external looks of things it doesn't appear to be too bad, I'll be a happy camper as long as the internals turn out allright. Then the hard part of picking out all the goodies to put it back together again....
