engine questions

I have a few tech questions I need help with.

First I have a 76 F-250 with a 429 it is emissions exempt here so it has no egr, or smog stuff on it but my question is , will it be alright to run 2 open breathers on my valvecovers? I already have 1 open breather and then a breather with a pcv valve but if I can id rather run just 2 open breathers will this hurt? I have really good oil pressure.

Second I have a holley 4160 carb with electriic choke, were do I run the wire to right now its hooked to the starter solonoid is that alright or is there a better place?

Last does it hurt to run a open aircleaner as I have 1 on my truck I figured or do I need the original?

How will you get the fumes out of the crankcase then ?

I run a open air filter without any problems.

I suppose the best alternative would be ram air with an air cooler on it.

can you run open air breathers? sure, I just hope you like to make sure your valve covers and externals of the engine are well oiled to prevent rust. Seriously yes that is done but what happens is the crankcase preasure builds up and starts pushing oil out those breathers and all over your engine not a pretty sight. A PCV system prevents that, there are times where a pvc system isn't the best way to go, but thats usually race engines and even then I run a exhaust evac system. Most carbs are actually tuned from the factory to compensate for that air bleed through the pvc, and you would have to recalibrate the carb.
As far as open element air filters I have run them for years on both my street and race engines and no problem.

The PCV system keeps you from getting oil blown all over your engine. Before the PCV system there was a "road draft tube" the ran for the back, top of the engine down below the motor and frame. The bottom of the tube was cut at an angle so that as you moved down the road it create a suction on the tube and pulled the fumes, etc. out of the engine onto the road. When they realized that the oil and crap was damaging the roads and making them slick, not counting polluting the ground and air, they came up with the PCV systen that sucks all the stuff into the engine and burns it. I would bet that emmissions exempt does include dumping any amount of oil anywhere.

The electric choke needs to be connected to a power source that is on only when the engine is running. Where you have it is on anytime the key is on, which will work if the engine starts right away. If it doesn't the choke can pull off before start up or if you turn the key on and not start the engine the choke warms up and pulls itself off. Some choke heaters are designed to work off the stator terminal on the alternator, which only has power when the engine is running and not whenever the key is on.

The only bad things with open air cleaners is the get dirty fast and the pull warm air into the carb from the engine compartment, not the better cold air from outside which helps make power and increase milage. They sure sound cool though, don't they, when you get into the secondaries of the carb.
