To begin..... I have a '75 F-100, 360, 2WD, C-6 tranny. Problem is..... when drivetrain is cold, the transmission wants to slip out of gear when I stop or go around corners. I can usually rev the motor a little and it will go back into gear. During this time, the tranny shifts fine..... it's just the stopping or cornering. This only happens for about the first 5 miles that I drive it. Once things are warmed up .... problem stops.
The fluid level is right on so what's up?
If there an easy fix or am I in for a rebuild? My '86 did the same thing for years but I'm in love with my '75 and I want to make things right with it.
Hopefully I can get help from you guys because I trust transmission shops to tell me the truth about as much as I trust my ex-wife.
It sounds to me that it has hard seals, maening they are no longer soft like they should be. After enough age, heat, and such, they can get that way. Then after you get the trans warmed up, the seal soften enough to do their job properly. The only way to get them changed is total disassembly. Good thing is, C6's are cheap to do.
You might have a clogged filter or loose connection sucking air till the fluid warms up. You could try a filter and pan oil change and maybe a little tranny doctor fluid but unless you find something definite it probably wont be long before you have to see the local tranny quack shop.
