4.2 exhaust???

im thinking of doing some kind of cat back exhaust on my 4.2 truck. i have thought about just going straight pipes from cat back but im worried that it will get that pissed off bumble bee sound that i definately do not want. does anyone know how a 4.2 sounds with straights from the cats back? and any suggestions to a good sounding muffler that wont give me that bumble bee sound, i want a low growl if at all possible. i know its a v6 not a v8 but i want it to sound as close to a v8 as possible. im not worried about how loud it is i just want a good sound to echo off of other peoples cars.

When I did mine, it sounded totally different. People on the site will tell you that you will lose low end, and it sounds a bit ricey.I have true duals, with a Dynomax, dual in and dual out, and it sounds decent and loud, it rumbles at low RPMs, making you forget it's a V-6. It can get ricey sounding above 3000 RPMs, but not like the little rice burners you hear on the road. I have noticed no low end loss, and I use it to tow my boat. The really cool thing about it, it looks great, and it take all the attention away from the ticking sound the motor makes (injectors). So, hopefully others will chime in, and give you more of a opinion to make a choice.

Thumbs up

My 97 came from the factory with the tail pipe in front of the right rear tire.I had a Dynomax turbo muffler installed and a new tail pipe exiting out behind the right rear tire.It has a very nice growl at idle and a somewhat V8 sound at upper rpms.

Just cruise through the threads, plenty of conversation on this topic. The way I see it, like the others in this thread, invest in a good muffler, and if you don't have the money to spare, single in and dual out. I probably would have done the same, but I got one hell of a deal on it. If you have to choose between stainless and chrome tips, invest on the stainless.( My gallery shows mine, a year later, and they still look the same)You can't go wrong.Drop a line, and let us know what you have chosen to do.

thanks for all the posts, i have a buddy with a 3.8 in an older bronco that he split from the cat back wiht no muffler and it sounded darn good. i think ill go with that since i havent heard any other v6's with good exhaust. everyone in my town just puts glasspacks and they get the bumblebee sound. i put true duals and 24" glasspacks on the 4.9 straight 6 a few years back on a 92 f150 i had, and it sounded like crap. thats why im so timmid about any muffler at all. if straight pipes doesnt work ill just go back to the stock exhaust and get a v8 next time. but ill post as soon as i get it done and let yall know how it sounds.
