Hey guys, my buddies 97 powerstroke has been stumbling alot lately. Its an auto, and driving down the road it would surge, and sometimes sitting at idle, just die. So I figure the CPS is bad. I put a new one in, and the thing won't start. It stumbles. it will crank and ever second or so it will fire just a little bit. I thought the new sensor was bad, so I put the old one back in, does the same thing. . .so I am pretty sure the sensors are good. So does anybody else have a problem getting theirs to start? FYI, the old sensor was out for almost a week before the new one got in. So all thoughts are appreciated. Thanks. Tim
if it ran before you pulled it, then as soon as you put the new one in you couldnt get it to start, I would check the wires from the pins to about 5 inches or so back for continuity. Just st see if you broke the wire, dumber things have happened you know....
Check out this thread, maybe some info that will help. Keep us post on what you check and what you symptoms are and I'm sure we'll be able to get her back up and running.
hey all,
So far the only thing I've tried, is I dissconnected the hypermax chip and tried again, no luck. Plugged everything back in. My first guess would be wiring, but the tach works? can the tack work and still have a problem? If thats the case, I'll check the wiring.
Tim
Yeah the pipes smoke for about ten minutes after trying to start it a few times not a lot, just whisping out. I'm guessing its gotta be wiring. I mean it worked before, the new one didn't work, and the old one wouldn't work after I tried the new one, so what changed? the only thing is the wiring got disturbed, I'll go try it out.

Well I went out and played with it again, and no dice. It did nothing while cranking for about five seconds and then it would start the occasional pop. So I started thinking fuel problem. I went to the HPOP where the fuel lines come off to each head, 90 degrees to the one going to the drivers side head, there is a schreder valve. I opened it and nothing came out. I cranked it again, and immediately checked the valve and still nothing. I checked fused, all good, couldn't even figure out which fuse goes to the fuel pump, as it doesnt say in the manual. But do you guys think its a pump? THanks. Tim
The fuel pump on a 97 is not electric it is mech. and it is located just below and in front of the turbo it runs off a lobe on the camshaft. Try to check the pressure when the engine is turning over.
If you have not already, check the electrical connection and the timmerman nut on the IPR . Also check the electrical connections on you valve cover gaskets and the connection on the engine wiring harness behind the air filter and the connections on the IDM and all of your firewall electrical connections below the brake master cylinder. Check the oil level in HPOP reservoir. If all of these are good unplug the ICP in the left head and try it.

still think you broke a wire. If , like you said, it ran with the old cps, and when you put the new one in it did nothing, and you went back to the original on which it did run, you jarred loose. IMO, you need to concentrate there, rather than looking at everything. concentrate and eliminate. Dont jump around..........
I agree with Todd525, make sure to eliminate the easy stuff first. Check the CPS wires really well. Ohm them out while someone moves them around.
IDM, Injector Driver Module, located on the left (driver) inside fender well, square metal box, 1" wide, with electrical connection on front. Wires run to a wiring coupler, then to engine harness.
Check the HPOP oil level in the reservoir, located in the front of the engine valley, rectangular aluminum. On the top right (passenger) is the oil pressure sending unit (sensor) on the left is a pipe plug. Unscrew the pipe plug with a 1/4" drive. Oil should be within 1/2" of top.
IPR, Injector Pressure Regulator, your HPOP pump is located rear bottom of the HPOP reservoir, in the valley, just infront of the fuel filter housing. The IPR screwed into the left rear of the pump. A two wire connection into a brass solenoid, to the rear of the solenoid is a brass spacer and then the timmerman nut, (stamped sheet metal nut) which holds the solenoid on.
ICP, Injection Control Pressure sensor, located front left inside cylinder head. Plastic three wire connector, in the head just above the IPR.
