conversion crazy!

Anyone here know if I can convert a '94 4wd crew 7.3 idi e4od to a zf 6? I know they were built for later trucks. Also many people think the zf5 is an inferior transmision, though better than the e40d. Has any one done the expensive nv4500 or nv5600 swap in a full size truck? They seem popular with the Bronco people. thanks.

I read that post, I'm driving an IDI, '94, not a power stroke, I'd probably be more happy with an nv4500, new bell housing a grip of miselaneous parts and more skill than I currenty posess.

The diesel ZF 6 will bolt up to an 83 6.9 engine or any other Ford diesel.
The gasoline version of the ZF 6 will not bolt up to any of the diesels.
Your speedometer is already in the rear axle on a 94, so that problem is non existant.
The ZF 6 bell housing is part of the transmission, called integral bell housing.
You will need more parts that are not as common to swap in a Dodge transmission, you are not going to find them in a salvage yard.
You can on the other hand find a ZF 6 and all the parts you need at a salvage yard if you look hard enough.
On a 4x4 you will also need the NV 283 transfer case that bolts up to the ZF 6, can be found in any 99 or later Ford 4x4 that is F250 or up.

You also need clutch pedal and master cylinder setup for either transmission.
You will probably be cutting the driveshafts for either swap unless you find a truck with your wheelbase to get the ZF 6 and transfer case out of and get the driveshafts as well.
You will also be changing the neutral safty switch to a clutch interlock with either transmission.
You will be swapping transfer cases with either transmission unless you go with a ZF 5.

Swapping an automatic to a manual transmission is a lot of work.
Why make it harder than it has to be?

I never thought I was smart, but I do try to look at things logically.

I know that if something will bolt up from the factory and is several years old, that will be an easier and cheaper way to go than it will be trying to hook up something that never was made in a factory in that combination.

Hundereds of thousands of Fords with ZF 6's running around, many of which have been wrecked. Cheap parts ready for the picking.

Yes there are some Fords running around with Dodge trannies in them, but we are probably looking at numbers in the low 10ths of a percent when compared to the number with the ZF 6. The chances of finding one in a local salvage yard is almost non existant. So that means you are going to buy the adapters and parts new or you are going to fabricate them yourself.

Neither of those options are cheap or easy.
