You usually do not notice an increase in mpg, but over time the cat becomes clogged and restricts you exhaust flow causing you engine to work harder and be less efficient.
"the basics on engines" to be able to bring air and fuel into the cylinder the engine has to remove the burnt exhaust gases. If the engine cannot remove the exhaust gases fast enough, not all of the exhaust gases are evacuated from the cylinder and you cannot get a full charge of air & fuel in. (i.e. less efficient burn, less horse power.)
I noticed a big difference when I took mine off..... but I did the whole thing. You might wanna consider a 3" dp AND the cat Delete, leave the muffler on if you want to, but Id be ridd of that too.
My MPG went up by about 1mpg w/ conservative driving. It jsut lets it flow.
And eventho i did the whole thing, Im still shore it will help by only takin off the cat, cuz my buddy took his off, and we think it flows better. You dont need a kitty on a diesel, it dosnt werk. Pitch it
Thanks for the replies .. i'll be cutting it out as soon as i get some spare time !! And yeah i have been considering a new down pipe by BANKS i hear the down pipe makes a big difference as well..

I want to do this mod but have a couple of questions first...#1 I live in a state where we have emissions and wonder do they have a way to check if there's actually anything inside the cat or do they just look to see if there's one installed and #2 once it's off, how do I get everything that's on the inside of it to the outside of it. #3 Do I need any special tools or can I get it done with some wrenches and a hammer?

It's a visual check to make sure it's there. To remove the junk inside the cat use a pipe to break it up, then dump out the pieces untill it's empty . I have heard of guys who have cut the cat apart, emptied the contents, then welded it back together ...

Yeah, you don't need a cat, just take it off, ram the guts out with a big pipe or screwdriver, and put it back on. I will tell you, if you did that, a downpipe, and an open air intake, you won't believe the power and the spool of the turbo! Plus it sounds even better!
