Check engine light

1996 Bronco 5.8L. Check engine light came on. Is there a way to make the check engine light blink to give me the proper error code? What is the best way to determine why the light came on other than taking it to a mechanic.

I just noticed that you have a 96. I think you have to have a reader. I bought one for $90.00 at walley world. Good investment.

Yep, gotta have the reader for OBD-II in the 96 models. Or take it to A/Z or one of the other major parts retailers as mentioned. Once you have the code, let us know exactly what code was generated. We can help diagnose and fix the trouble from there.

found solution to problem

I took the Bronco to Advanced Auto and the check engine light code was a bad EGR valve. But the manager suggested it might be carbon build-up in the valve that could cause the light to come on. He suggested running a full tank of high octane fuel along with STP fuel injector cleaner first. He saved me $67 for the new part. I hope this eliminates the problem.

Buying a scan tool has worked out great for me. I had a CEL due to an O2 sensor in my 96. Had it scanned reset at the parts store. CEL came back, replaced the O2 sensor. Reset the CEL by disconnecting the battery. Problem fixed! I thought having a scan tool would be great, I would get lots of use from it. I haven't thrown a code in over two years in my Bronco. Turns out it was a good insurance policy.

My neighbors love it!

For future reference... If you have it scanned make sure you ask them for the exact code number that's showing up and bring that number to this board. There are many things that can trigger a bad egr reading and if we have the exact code number that your pulling we can tell you exactly what the computer is telling you. This brings the guess work down to a zero factor.
