Should I swap the 351m (bored .30) in favor of a 460 in my 78 bronco or build up the current engine?
the 351 has about 25k on a rebuild (according to previous owner) But it seems like these things are just complete turds in terms of performance, its dangerous slow on the road too. So do I do the basic upgrades on the 351 (exhaust, carb, intake manifold, maybe cam..) or do I just lay all the cash down at once and go for the big boy??
I did a little research into this a while (not that I own either a 351m or a 460, mind you) and came to the conclusion that massive power gains can be made with both a 460 and a 400 - the latter costing about half. Everyone pays a premium for the big go-fast motors, but the 400 can be built up for more power, dollar for dollar.
You'll find a lot of people, even here on FTE, that insist the m-blocks are boat anchors and that's it. In stock form, yeah they suck. But you can get 400hp out of a 400 without breaking the bank.
Check out the 335-series engine forum here - tons of great info on these under-rated motors.
And yeah - awesome avatar. I'm surprised they let you get away with it.
Like andym said, the 351M/400s suck in stock form.
If you get rid of the smog cra*, then that alone helps alot.
The compression is alittle low(at 8:1), but with the uprades you mentioned: Carb(600ish cfm), intake w/o egr, double roller timing chain, cam, and headers and the engine would be good to go.
Now if you could find a cheap 460, and have the money you'll be able to get more power out of it over the 400(and still have it streetable).
Interesting. I just don't want to drop a bunch of cash on all the upgrades and be disappointed with the performance, when I could probably spend the same amount on a 460, and have a better base to start with. So what kind of a numbers would the 351m put down with the things mentioned?
oh and what cubic inch is a 351 bored 30 over? (and if someone could tell me the equation to figure that out, that would be awesome.)
I'd go with the 460. I swapped a 460 into my 79 bronco. The torque is just amazing. Once you drive a big block, you don't wanna go back to a small block, trust me.
And a 460 can be upgraded cheap
I know if you bump the compression ratio up to around 9-9.5:1 w/ carb, intake, cam, timing chain, and headers you can get about 400 HP and 450 ft. lbs(if you get the crank and rods from a 400 and drop them in place).
Capt what are you going to do with the truck ?
Is it a toy ?
Or transportation ?
If its a toy go 460 you wont regret it.
If you go with the M you will always be wondering what it would have been like with the 460.
I agree 110% with TX460Bronco, There's no substitute for the 460 vs the 351M/400M. YEs, you can get up to 400HP out of the 335 series, but look at what you get if you spend the same amount on the 460. I'm swapping my 351W H.O. for a 460, too. JSM84
