Hood lock

Has anyone out there developed a good cheap way to rig up a hood lock that could be used on a 66 -250? I got one from Whitneys but it doesn't look like it will go on a designed. I bet there is something simpler- not exactly a padlock hanging down from the hood- Thanks,
JA

JA, If you are handy enough, you can make any late model inside release latch work. While not bolt up, it can be made to work.

I'm going to copy another guy in our club. He drilled a hole through the 'safety catch' latch for a small padlock that hangs down behind the grille. You don't even see it unless you're looking for it. It's a small padlock, maybe the size they make for car cover cables or a little larger.

The padlock works great if you are trying to keep thieves out of your engine compartment.

If your concern is to keep the hood from flying up in your face, more than theft, drill a hole in the safety latch the exact diameter of a hitch pin (looks like a big hair pin, or a bigger version of hood pins.).. they are about 2-1/2-3" long and would hold your hood down better than a lock should the safety latch not be enough.

BTW this pin was enough to deter my 16 year old boy from opening the hood for about 45 minutes, LOL ,when I told him to put in a quart of oil but didn't tell him i had installed the pin. Perhaps he aint the brightest bulb in the box, but neither is your average battery thief

Was going to post simular question and came across this thread. Took about 5 min's to remove and replace the safety lever, 20 min's to find my drills, and about another 5 min's to drill the hole. Had a small weather proof type lock, measures around 1 1/2" X1" X 3/4, believe anything smaller would probably come thru the safety latch opening. Anyhow, going to be a pain in the backside if thief or vandal wants to mess with anything in the engine compartment. Thanks for the tip.

Has anyone tried to install a cable operated latch like the new cars?

Not a big fan of those, Major. for example, my dad is on his third hood latch cable on his Ranger. Has 64000 miles on it.

Pulled the handle right off one on an overheating Chebby one time. The car wasn't the only thing overheating.

Found out last night that it's fortunate kept a flash light in the truck. Meets needs for now, may look into installing hood release system at later date. Don't think it necessary to keep locked at all times, only when left unattended for periods of time. Surely there must be company who has come up with an after market hood release system for these vintage trucks. So many other vehicle projects on plate will probably never get around to it all long as current method works. However, Next salvage yard run, may check out few other Ford model vehicles, same vintage, see if any can be adapted for truck application.
