Hello guys! Im a new to Ford Guy. I took ownership of a 1978 F-250 XLT Ranger 4X4. It has a 4 speed manual and not sure on the transforcase. But reading forums I believe i have a 69' 429 block code c9veb with d0ve-c heads and d0ve-9425-b intake. The crank is a 4u with a 260 comp cam. Does this sound like a good solid engine to rebuild since it needs it. I believe this is just a basic 429 but please correct me if Im wrong. Any one know what horse power i should expect if I rebuild it.
Most likely it's an early 1970 engine, and works as good as any for a rebuild starting point. biggest thing is watch the pistons you buy as the cylinder heads only have 75cc chambers, which is why everyone thinks that the DOVE heads are the way to go for building lots of hp, they raise the compression on later model engines back up, but with the early blocks, and those heads you really need to have a dish piston or you end up with too much compression and need high octane fuel.
I would do some porting on the heads expecially on the exhaust side, look into a dual pattern cam (more duration on the exhaust side), and a good aftermarket intake like a wieand stealth, and try and get your compression around 9:1 or maybe a little bit more, and you can fairly easily get it around 400hp and as much torque.
