Hey fellas. Well, I have a 2000 PSD with 153K on it (auto). It's been having an odd vibration from underneath, almost directly under my feet. Does it on and off at virtually any speed. Feels like it's coming from a rotating part, but I'm not totally sure. Had my mechanic/family friend take apart the driveshaft. Not the u-joints like I was hoping, and the tranny is fine. Anybody know of some other possibilities here? I want to fix it!
I can feel the vibration when I'm driving at highway speeds and around town as well. Sometimes it's more prominent around town. I cannot tell if its from something being loose or from a rotating part. I can feel it under the floorboards. However I'm not sure where it's coming from..Possibly the front of the truck? Maybe a wheel bearing or something? Just a shot in the dark.
The reason i said fuel pump is that you are practically sitting on it ... but that would make a high pitched vibration ... nothing like a bearing going bad ... sounds to me like you might have a ujoint going bad Even though some one says it is not that they are very hard to determine unless you take them off. IF it is 4x4, verify that your hubs are not stuck in a locked positon and or that axles are not spinning while rolling. Im just a shade tree mech if that. If not ujoint for sure, may be a torque converter.
My truck was doing the same thing. Then i gave it some juice right outside my house and my rear end locked up. The end of the pinion had sheared off where it met the ring.
I had a problem with vibration too. What it ended up being was I threw a wheel weight. Just go down to a tire store where you live or where you got your last tires and have them balance them, Its somthing that should be done anyway and its cheep if not free too. It can elemenate somthing atleast.
If the front wheel bearing was about worn out, you would notice poor steering characteristics. I had a similar vib, and it turnd out my rear driveshaft needed balanced, and mine had the "dampener" on the rear shaft also, when i took it to a driveshaft shop, he promptly looked at it and split it (its cast) and re balanced it, havent had a noise since, but it took out a u joint at the same time and that made it even worse, my noise came from the front drivers side, and sounded like something was hitting my floorboars......... A simple check for the front wheel bearing is to jack up the appropriate side, and check for play, if there is play, be sure that its not the ball joints/steering link, although im going to bet youll find yuor rear drive shaft needs balanced
Hope this helps
EDIT: the guy at the driveshaft shop, said alot of times, those "dampeners" cause more problems then they fix, and thats why he promptly removed it, and in doing so you could see that the inside was clean, and had been vibrating
Had the bearing replaced. Truck STILL has vibration. Now I cannot tell where it's coming from. It's not extremely harsh, but my mechanic pulled out the driveshaft and inspected all the u-joints and saw no tell-tale signs. The 4x4 isn't locked in and the front driveshaft isn't rotating. I'm really stumped here. It's bad enough the bearing cost $389 bucks. But the fact that the truck still vibrates really puts the icing on the cake. I'm beginning to get angry with this crap. I want my truck to be FIXED.
Seriously, try getting your REAR driveshaft balanced, yes your u joints may not have failed yet but it costs like 30 bucks to get one balanced, try it. i would almost garuntee thats what it is, i had the same vib/ noice, with same results, i watched them balance it too, it was rediculous to hear how much just the shaft vibrated/resonated just on the balance table!
I've had an annoyong vibration between 30-35 mph as long as I can remember. Replaced some of the u-joints a couple of years ago to no avail. I just wonder how many of the members here have their drive shafts redone at a balance shop and fixed any problems they may have been having. Mine is not so bad it may damage something, but still bugs me because I like things perfect but can't afford to just throw money at something like this.
