I recently got some new tires, and was supposed to get an alightment, but the workers at the tire place (sears tire and battery) showed me the movement on my ball joints and said the range of motion that the driver side had was a little above specs, and needed to be replaced. Im tough on cash right now, and its a few hundred for them to do. Ive been looking for the parts to just do it myself, or can i just put this off for a while?
i agree 100%. to find an honest mechanic, go and ask for a checkup on the front end, or even a simple alignment. If they list off a few hundred bucks worth of parts that need to be replaced, well, you know whos lookin for extra cash...
I went with Moog greaseables. Broncograveyard.com has some real good deals on pairs of balljoints, nongreasables i belive, but they suck. I cant remember where i read, but a guy is already replacing his not even half a year. they also suggested Moog greasables being the best choice.
I was in the same position as you. Highschool student with pennies to spend. I bought all 4 ball jpints and had a backyard mechanic do it for me, $150 bucks. Well turns out his buddy did the work and messed up a lot of my front end. I had estimates of $1000 worth of parts, but found a good shop that brought it down to $500. all 4 balljoints, camber bushings, alrignemnt etc etc
