ignition problem

I have a 1989 f-150 300 I-6. Check engine light came on while driving. Power would instantly drop and would idle rough. Drive for a few miles engine light would go off and run fine. Couple of weeks later, truck would not start at all. I replaced the iginition module, then truck started 2 times then not at all. I then replaced the pickup module inside the distributor. Same thing, truckt started a couple of times and idled fine. After about 4 min. check engine light came on and stalled. Now will not start. No fire, engine just turns over. Anybody got any suggestions? Could it be a relay or O2 sensor? Is there a way to check the codes? I heard you can use a paper clip for codes check

check for a broken wire/bad connection on the ignition relay on the driver side fender, near the hood hinge
