Seems to be alot of mis-information on this forum. Thought I'd clear some things up for everyone.
Myth: The upcoming 6.4L has TWIN turbos
Fact: The upcoming 6.4L has 2 SEQUENTIAL (in series) turbos
Yes folks, these are the cold hard facts. The 6.4L has 2 different size turbos. The exhaust outlet on the smaller turbine feeds into the inlet of the larger turbine. This sequential setup is not the same as twin turbos where 2 identical turbos operate independently of each other on seperate banks. Just wanted to clear that up.
Sequential turbos- A smaller turbo INLINE with a larger turbo running from both banks
TWIN turbos- 2 equal size turbos are parallel from each other and run off seperate banks of the engine
Is the in-line turbo idea there to help with turbo lag?
Does this new design use VGT type turbos?
Is this going to give us twice the trouble with build up in the turbo?
Is there a cooler between turbos? will heat from one turbo to another be a problem?
Sorry for all the questions just trying to learn as much as I can about the new setup.
Thanks
Glen

Just got back from Ford school on diesel engine performance diag. The teacher has seen the production model of the 6.4. The new turbo setup will feature one turbo that has the function of something similar to a VGT, but it is called something different. The teacher said that the engine is quiter then the 6.0. 650 ft. lbs. of torque becasue the injectors are going to fire throughout the whole powerstroke of the engine, being able to fire up to 7 times in one stroke. Also, oil change intervals are 10,000 while fuel filters are 20,000. No high pressure oil system, new high pressure fuel system to fire the injectors. Thats all I can remeber for now, other then they will probably show up in dealers around September/Oct., but won't be sold until Jan. 1st.
The twin (or sequential) turbos have been on the 4.5L V-6 powerstrock for a year or longer (found in the LCF ford trucks). Quicker response is what I've been told. Tractor pullers have been stacking turbos for several years.

Hey thanks for that wonderful information there..Good stuff
Also, they have the 4.5 in F150's, but I guess due to NVH reasons they won't be able to sell them due to that fact, and also, that Ford doesn't see the desire from American people to drive diesel powered light trucks.
So they will be on the dealer lots, but the dealer cannot sell them?
Thats not uncommon, when I was working for chevrolet back in 92 and the new camaros came out we had one for 3 weeks before the public was allowed to even see it (had ot keep it covered at all times), and then once unvieled were not allowed to sell if for 2 months.

Until they come out, no one knows what this dang truck will possess. Autoweek and other spy/ auto sites state only 6.4L. Edmunds specifies 6.4L with Sequential turbos. hmmmm. Very interesting... Thanks for the inside scoop. Can't wait to climb behind the wheel .
