I am looking to get an 18 foot trailer to haul a jeep. Anyone have any recommendations? I see allot of Kaufman trailers being towed by the guys taking cars to auction so I was looking hard at them but I also think I could get a pretty good deal on a PJ.
What I am looking to get is 7-8 K trailer electric brakes both axles, wood deck, Stake Pocket for tie downs. Pretty normal stuff.
Any suggestion on trailer makes or what to look for would be helpful or a good place to do business with in southeastern WI (or IL or northern In)
Brand is irrelevant. I bought the cheapest trailer that I could find. Thats was in 1994. I have hauled that thing everywhere. Hauled everything. Haven't done anything but put new tires on it (OK, new light bulbs too).
You will want to make sure that the trailer is W-I-D-E between the fenders. 82" or so (mine is only 76" and way too narrow).
Longer ramps are definitely better, easier to load, and when hauling vehicles with less ground clearance, less likely to drag trying to load. As far as build goes, for what you want, any style would work fine. I prefer to have a good frame myself, the style with the raised angle iron around the front and sides are the weakest frame style, but will hold up fine to normal duty, it's the overloading they don't do as well with. I think the rack is kind of annoying but there are times it would be helpful too. I built my own, so I can't really answer brands, and brand is irreleveant, as the build style is more important. I will say thigh, a little stopper rack on front is a good idea though, it helps a lot with dead ones if you are self loading, to keep them from rolling on off the front. I had a binder fail once, and the chain got loose, let the car roll forward, and had I not had the little "headache rack" on the front, it would have been in my tailgate...

What I have noticed on the "good" car trailers, designed for being car haulers, then have a 4" tall tube/wall at the front to push the front tires against and have slots for chains or tie downs.
It is a long haul, but there is a M&J Trailers out of Marysville, Kansas. I had an 18ft. bumper pull, low boy, with brakes, ramps, and a steel deck. I hauled back and forth from Alaska a couple of times. A good trailer. But, if you have an F250 or F350 I would strongly suggest a gooseneck. They pull, travel, and ride much better than a bumper pull could ever dream of. I would also suggest a steel deck. It never wears out, you can weld on heavy duty tiedowns. If you don't like where they are located cut them off with a torch, grind it down and weld them where you want them. The steel won't rot like wood. These are some really great trailers. I have a 22ft gooseneck with 14,000lb GVW now. I had just over 19,000 pounds and held it great over some of the meanest roads a person will ever encounter coming down from Alaska. The trailers are called Fastline. The website is www.mjtrailers.com. The 18ft that I had a few years ago was only $1,800. I am sure they are more now with the way steel prices have sky rocketed. These guys also will build a trailer to your specification.

I bought my trailer that I tow my Jeep with from Rondo Enteprises in Syacamore, IL. With that said I almost bought from NITE Equipment outside of Rockford, IL. I got a 18+2 which is more then I needed but it was a great deal. Don't shop by brand just look at the quality. Just because it's not a big name doesn't mean its a good trailer.
What kind of Jeep?
I have 99TJ 5" of lift 33s going to step up to 35s soon 4.88's front and rear ARB's D30 front 8.8 Rear.
Got any questions about the local places shoot me a PM.
