My compressor has a gap of .028. I pulled the clutch but did not see a shim. Where exactly would it be located?
Thanks guys,
Doug
A lot of times the shim sticks inside the clutch disc, use a pick or small screwdriver and stick it through the bolt hole from the front of the clutch a little crooked (against the edge of the hole) and see if you can push the shim out of the the clutch. It will not be tight, but often it has some grease holding it in place. All ford compressors have a shim from the factory.
I re-shimmed my compressor clutch plate last week for the exact symptoms described at the beginning of this thread. My air gap was around .040" when I started, and the clutch just wouldn't pull in after a few minutes of operation.
I had the problem yesterday on an '06 with 325 miles on it. Started on a short trip and about 20 minutes into the trip, sitting at a stop light, the A/C started blowing hot air. As soon as I started rolling again, it went back to cold and there were no problems the rest of the day. Outside temp was about 85, A/C was set to Auto at 70 degrees.
I also thought I smelled burning rubber, but it didn't last long enough to be sure and since there were no more problems, I didn't worry about it too much. Is it possible the compressor siezed for a minute causing the belt to rub?
Seems like a close thread, so I will post my problem here. Last week my 03 F250SC started acting odd. With the AC on, it would continue to blow cold air, but it would randomly switch between the vents and the defroster. Id I monkeyed with one of the vents by shutting it and opening it, the air would start to flow out the vents again. When it switched there was a platic type clicking sound from inside the dash.
Brought it to the Stealer who told me it's a broken part, 9h465, they call it a thermal air control valve. $400.00, not covered by my Ford NewExtraCare warranty. My trucks is 3.5 years old with 26K miles on it.
my ('99 f-350 sd) air has the problem of a/c working for a while then blowing warm air, then after 10-15 minutes resumes cold air blowing. the air gap appears fine, and the tech could find nothing wrong. however, i finally was able to check the compressor when the warm air came on, and the compressor was not turning (it is working when cold air is blowing). this doesn't seem like it would be a vacuum problem, so my question is: is the compressor shot, or about to die? as an aside, i also have the warm air blowing through the vents when the a/c isn't on (which does seem like a vacuum problem). any thoughts?
