Hi all
My dad has a 77 f-150 4x4 with a 400 in it. My problem is the transfer case is makeing this loud noise whenever you drive it. It is a noise that sounds like its out of fluid or something. But it is full. It happens whenever you are pushing on the gas. If you let off the noise will quit and push it again it will start again. what all would make it do this? It started all the sudden. I appreciated any help i can get.

The transfer case shouldnt be doing anything when your in 2 wheel drive. Have you been driving it on dry pavement in 4 wheel drive? If you have you coulda broke the transfer case. Well good luck!

well that can't be the reason because this truck hasn't even seen pavement in probably 5 years. All it is droven on is field roads. Also it is rarely ever put into 4 wheel drive. Any other ideas?

Richard,
Has your rear end got gear lube in it? Drivetrain noises can fool the best of us. The rear end can howl under acceleration and quiet down while coasting. If you run the rear end low and it starts to howl, there is no cure, you'll have to replace it.
As far as the transfer case is concerned, even if it is damaged it shouldn't make any noise unless it's engaged. It's possible that its stuck in 4x4 and has been for sometime. If so, just get it out of 4x4, back in 2x4 and operate it normally. If it makes noise in 4x4 chances are your off road and it won't bother you anyways.Good Luck

is your transfer case chain driven? If so there is primary carrier that engages, 2wd or 4wd, doesn't matter. They are really hard to find, i finally got one for mine after 3 months of looking. Hope this isn't the problem
You could possibly have problems with the transfer case {check input and output shafts for endplay, which would indicate a worn or bad bearing or bearings)that will produce noise in 2 or 4 wheel drive or both, or you might have problems with the rearend, noise can transmit trough the driveshaft making it sound like it's being produced by the T-case. Check the oil in both components for discoloration and metal particles which would indicate a problem.Trey Gorbett '78 F250-Bronco Hybrid 460,NP435,NP205,Dana60 front,Sterling 10.25 rear,4.10's, 17/40x16.5 GroundHawgs [a HREF="http://www.ford-trucks.net/users/bandit99/index.html"]SuperBronco[/a]
