95 Ranger CMP Sensor Error

Hi! I have a 95 ranger with the 3.0 2wd and automatic. The check engine light came on and the code was "camshaft position sensor A bank 1 circuit malfunction". Is the CMP sensor easy to replace? This came on after I fixed a vacumn leak. There is also a strong smell of gasoline at times after its been running. The truck runs great after I fixed the vacumn leak. Should I tackle the CMP sensor? Will I need any special tools? Thanks.

The gas smell could be a leak in the EVAP system.

Ranger CMP Mechanic

Thanks Rockledge. Your right, a bunch of good information. The sensor was bad unfortunatley the snc shaft was also sheared off. The light was on for only one day but thats all it took. I am not up to changing the shaft. I barley got the sensor out. No room. Who would you recomend me take the truck to change out the shaft. Would a Firestone be able to do it or should I take it to the dealer. Know any good mechanics in SW Houston? Thanks.

Any qualified shop can handle it.

Its funny. I replaced the cmp sensor and Snycroniser and the check engine light is off now but the engine still runs about the same. I thought I would get a little more acceleration out of the truck. It idles fine. Maybe thats all the 3.0 can give.
