I'm about to change my Glow Plug Controler on 85 F250 6.9 and in the Haynes manual it tells how to diagnois it but it doesn't list the removal procedure. Does it just screw out or what? I relatitivley inexperiance and I'm just looking for some pointers. (Land mines to avoid) Thanks
It just screws out, if it will.
More than one story about twisting the controller off has been posted here.
If that happens, time to pull the head to get it out and stop the coolant leak.
Soak it well with PB Blaster for several days before you attempt to remove it.
Remember it has been in there and not moved for 21 years now.
Actually you could convert to the new style system for less than a head removal and replace would cost.
Where do I pull the power. Can I just connect to the #3 wire going to the controler and connect it to the #6 wire(the one to the solinoid) and just put the switch in-line
compleatly bypassing all the other wires on the controler??
Bypassing the early style glow plug controller, 83 thru 86 trucks
Stock glow plug relay, located behind the passenger side battery down on the inner fender well.
Do not confuse it with the starter relay that looks like it but is located on the inside of the fender mounted vertically.
Glow plugs draw a lot of juice from the battery.
You can not switch the glow plugs directly, to many amps draw when they are cold.
Use the stock relay in the picture and run a push button to activate the relay.
The purple wire labeled "Glow plug controller" is the one you need to remove from the relay.
Attach a wire to that terminal and run it inside the cab to a momentary push button switch, attach it to one terminal on the switch.
Attach a wire to the other terminal on the switch and run it to the fuse panel.
Using a circuit tester, find a fuse that only has power when the key is turned to ON.
That is the fuse you want to attach you feed wire to.
Installation is complete.
Operation.
Turn the key to ON.
Push the button for 10 seconds.
Start the engine.
Done.
You will find in warm weather less than 10 seconds will be enough time on the glow plugs to start the engine.
You will also find that if the engine has been running in the last several hours, you do not need them at all.
This saves the glow plugs for when you really need them.
Red green don´t hold the switch for over 10 seconds. Many brands of glow plugs will burn out quickly. Best is to buy duel coil plugs. They will not burn out however long you hold the switch. Kennedy diesel has them for a great price.
