A lot of us with older trucks have had to replace the wiring at some point or another.
I built the wiring harness for my truck from scratch. It wasn't too bad but took a lot of time. Now I'm looking at another project that needs wired and ran across E-Z wiring. They are by far the least expensive harness manufacturer I've found, but I don't know what kind of quality they maintain.
SO--is anybody familiar with E-Z wiring products? Are they good quality?
I just recently installed the EZ-21 circuit in my 49. I was/am very happy with the quality of the product. I was going to build my own harness but when I got to pricing all the different color wires, etc I found it to be cheaper and easier to buy the EZ Wiring harness. Check E-bay, I got mine brand new in the box for $150 + shipping.
The installation went well and I didn't have any major hang-ups even though I found the instructions a little lacking. My instruction sheets did not include the last page which is a work sheet. I was able to print out the instructions from the website to get the worksheet. The instructions themselves are a little vague.
One other small beef (and this could probably be said for all aftermarket harnesses) they are designed for the fuse block to be mounted on the left side and all the wires to run for and aft on the left side. I mounted my fuse block to the left of the steering column but chose to route my wiring across the inside of the firewall and out the passenger side and then for and aft. Therefore the wires to the fore and aft lights were a bit short (easily fixed).
I am happy with the harness. If you need any help with it let me know
The EZ harness 21 is worth the money in copper alone, must weigh 30#! I bought the mini fuse version, it allows any mounting placement but you'll need to build a quick release mounting plate for it since it doesn't have screw holes. I don't mind that since I could wire the whole thing with the fuse box hanging below the dash then snap it into place once finished. I mounted mine on the left side of my hanging pedal mount.
It's easiest to use if you have an aftermarket column and wiper headlight switches that uses the GM connectors, but it gives you the Ford and Chrysler wiring instructions as well. The only other thing not in the kit is any ground wires needed.
I agree I just installed the mini version in my '56. (Thanx to AXracer for the link!!!) The only thing i have yet to figure out is the hazard circuit. Im using the stock column so I guess i need to find a switch?? Anyway ,great kit would definitly use again!!
I have the old style with all black wires with the name of each circuit on them. Been in my 52 for about 7 years,no problem. Highly recommend their harnesses.
Have installed 5 or 6 EZ kits in past 8 years; just a few minor problems.
You can get the wiring in black or GM colors. Either way the names are printed on the wires every 12 inches or so.
That's awesome guys (and any gals I'm unaware of)!!!
I really appreciate the feedback.
I found a bunch of companies that offer smaller harnesses for $250-$500. A couple of them, I know for sure, offer good high quality products--but that's still a lot of hours at work to make the money for those harnesses.
When I found the E-Z harness for so much cheaper I was excited, but then worried it would be cheap and poor quality. Now, thanks to you all, I believe I can trust the product and save a fair amount of money!
My first total rewiring job was done with a Painless harness. The instructions were great & very detailed & I liked the maxi fuse feature for total harness protection but it was like almost $300 6 years ago. The next wiring job I did I used the EZ wire kit because of the signifigantly lower cost. I found it to be of equal quality to the painless kit but it lacked the maxi-fuse feature, which I added my self. Just go to your parts house & get a mountable maxi-fuse holder & a 60A fuse. Also, as was mentioned a few posts earlier, the instructions are VERY vague & if I hadn't had the experience of doing the Painless harness first I don't think I would have been able to do the job. So basically if you are using an EZ wire harness & you've never wired a vehicle before expect some confusion unless you can get a copy of the Painless instruction book to clearify things a little.
I also would like to thank you for your comments. I am waiting for my harness to arrive. If you go to the Painless web site, you can download the installation manual for reference. I can also send anybody an electronic copy of the EZ manual.
Thanks for the idea of downloading the Painless manual; I did the universal manual 90501. Looks like a lot of good stuff in there....should be required reading for every EZ wiring purchase.
