My wife has a 01 escape . I have not been able to duplicate the noise she is hearing,so I am going off what she is telling me.She says that after she comes to a stop and releases the brake to take off she hears a hiss coming from under the Dash. She says she can then tap the brakes and the hiss will stop.Anyone have any ideas?
Brake booster? They sometimes hiss a little bit. Do this to see if the booster is good or not: Hop into the vehicle. DO NOT start it. Pump the brake pedal until it gets hard (maybe 5 pumps or so). On the last pump keep your foot on the pedal and start the vehicle. The pedal should drop slowly down a bit. If it does you know the booster is good. If not, then replace it.
I see this was posted 6-19-06 but I have to say that my wife also has a 2001 Escape and has the same problem. I found that there is a rubber boot with some type of foam rubber insert that is on the firewall and the brake peddle rod is going through this. The base of the boot came loose and the hissing started. I was able to reinstall the boot and the hissing was almost eliminated, sounds better but still there. I think maybe the boot needs replacing. Just my two cents.
our 02 Escape had the same problem, the dealer mechanics were kidding me that there was a snake under the brake pedal, but it turned out to be something like the booster had gone bad, or something similar to that.
