O2 sensor location

Hi all, my buddy has a '97 ranger 4X4 and while driving with him the other day the truck was shooting out black smoke from the muffler and the check engine light came on. Took the truck to autozone and they hooked up a scan thing and they said the o2 sensor was shot so he bought one but can't find where it goes. Does anyone know where this part goes? Thanks guys

With regard to the issue at hand, there's two of them that matter, they are screwed into the exhaust manifolds, one on each side of the engine. The code # tells which side.

Keep in mind though, that oftentimes codes that are supposedly related to an 02 sensor are instead indicative of a problem with the fuel/air intake systems.

If we knew the code # we could help a lot more.

With black smoke comming out of the tailpipe, I would be checking the air filter condition and the FPR way before installing new O2 sensors.
