The other day I got pulled over by a cop for not having a muffler on my truck!
I never dreamed that my truck was loud enough to be pulled over. My friends trucks are twice as load as mine and I got pulled over. I got a warning and had to put a (muffler) on my truck withn 5 week days. I didn't get it on in 5 days but I got one on it. A gutted out cat works great for a fake muffler. just cut the pipe slide the cat on the pip reweld the pipe and weld the empty cat to the pipe with a straigh pipe inside of it. I saw the cop and was babing the old girl too. The truck is loudest when you lug it around so I guess thats why it happened.
thats pretty cool. A buddy of mine has a carb'd 85 F-150 4x4 4spd with a 300. He has a 2.5" exhaust (straight piped all the way back) that goes into a 4" miter cut tip which sticks out a few inches behind the cab. well anyhow, he was drivin down the road in front of my cousin and me last night doin about 40, and every now and then his truck would backfire and then shoot flames out of the pipe. It was bad ***! I kept thinking "Man its gonna be on like Donkey Kong if he pulls up next to a cop with it doin that."
i got pulled over in my trans am with just headers, cop said "either go to a muffler shop or go home" the cop was also my high school auto shop teacher, that might have helped some.
lol....well, at least you didn't get caught for "improper starting". so what kind of exhaust you planning on putting on it? I still got a stock exhaust on mine, but i'm looking for something to "open" it up a bit.

You can see what I did to my stock exhaust in my gallery. It opened it up a bit soundwise, and was very low cost. Ideally, I should get a freer flowing muffler and a short pipe turning out in front of the wheel. I have heard the stock muffler is the most restrictive part of the exhaust on these 300s.
well, i've been going to clifford performance and checking out what they have. I'm not planning on changing to headers, maybe a Y pipe, no cat, and a high flowing exhaust. My neighbor's son has a 300-6 with only the cat on it, and it sounds pretty good, especially for a six banger .
The split EFI manifold is the best flowing available (according to the boards here), the cat really isn't that restrictive. It's the small diameter pipe they used AFTER the cat that kills it.
my 81 that I got pulled over in has 2 in all the way to the y pipe I made and then its 2in outside diameter. with 3in tips. It has a deep beuler but will crack when you rev it up and back off. The motor lost a little power over the true straight pipe but the sound is worth it. the pipe is all the way out the back. exhaust in front of the tires is easy but the extra length of pipe to the back will make them sound better.
