adjustable or not?
i have a 99 ranger with 4cyl engine, one that has 2 spark plugs per cylinder.
engine ignition timing is set too advanced. it has that typical advanced timing noise under load. tsa-tsa-tsa-tsa.
now, it also has those ignition blocks instead of ditributor, i completely forgot the name of them. got it, ignition module! as far as i know, those are not adjustable, correct?
so, my question is - can i retard ignition somehow? not that i have much problem with the car, it's just that i am very sensitive to any engine noises, and would rather have not to listen to it. it sounds like engine is tuned for better pickup, which i do not care at all.
will appreciate. you can pm me or email me at uwilcpo@leskomedia.com
thanks
Those two ignition blocks are called "coil packs" because they contain the coils that fire the cylinders. Your '99 2.5L w/DIS ignition does not have an ignition module; instead, the PCM fires the coils directly. There is no way to retard the ignition.
It sounds to me like you might be experiencing what is more commonly known these days as "pinging" which is addressed in a variety of ways. For more info, check out the links in Section V of the following:

i know my cars well enough to say - no, it's not pinging. it is that very typical, very specific noise of advanced timing. i had it on so many occasions and on so many cars that know it real well.
ok, like i suspected - it can't be retarded. tough. i'll just live with it. like i said - it's no problem, just kind of getting on my nerve. i'll just consider it to be another fun side of driving this vehicle.
