Yes, you will need to change the wiring. It is a planetary reduction unit. I put one on my 86 when the factory original starter died a month ago. I got mine from SPI distribution in Chesapeake Va. You could try calling Matt at their Chantilly Va. location, 1-800-361-1714 on Monday, he should be able to help you, and it shouldn't cost as much through them. On the wiring, you have to move the starter power cable to the battery side of the solenoid then add a small (16-18 ga.) wire from the old starter side to the new starter lead (it will be labeled). Mine cranks with a vengance, even hot. The Precision rebuilt number is:3225 and the new number is:N3225 for 92-96 M/T 460, for AT the numbers are:3226 and N3226. On your 84, they do not differentiate between AT and MT, both call for a 3152 or N3152 starter, so t you may need the AT starter for an 84 MT truck. Matt should have the information as to interchange. Mention you got the info through FTE from me.
