OK..I wouldn't bother you all if it wasn't about to drive me crazy. There is a distinct HUMMING sound centered around the bed of my truck. I can hear it while I'm in the cab. When the truck is cold, it starts about 3-5 seconds after I fire it up. I can't for the life of me understand what it could be. It almost sounds like a fan...Any thoughts?
oh, BTW, all of you who encouraged me to rebuild my tranny, THANKS....I bit the bullet and got it done...Much better..New Motor, New tranny, life is good! Except this noise!
Could be your electric fuel pump. Fuel pump noise is very noticeable when you are low on fuel. It could also be caused by the exhaust system grounding to the frame some how. Check for missing rubber in your exhaust system hangers. That sound could also be coming from under the hood believe it or not. I had a rattling sound that seemed to be coming from the catalytic converter, but was really a bad bearing in the alternator! Good luck.
Turn the key on with the engine off and the door open, see if you hear the same noise. If so, that's your fuel pump.
They're able to be heard but an overly loud one is usually an indication of it being on it's way out. If you don't have dual tanks, and your truck has over 100k on it, it's a great idea to change that pump before it dies and leaves you stranded.
Other vehicles make the same noise.
If you have dual tanks, listen to both of them and compair the noise. With the dual tanks, if one goes the other will still get you around.
you said that the trans and motor got replaced recenty how soon after did the doise stars after that cuz ive had to older fords *** in to work with the same kind of problem and it was actually a lose bearing in the trans

Well, I did the key on thing. I heard the fuel pump engage for about 2 seconds, then it disengaged, it sounded normal.
I only hear it when the truck is running, and it starts about 5 seconds after I fire it up...
I also check for any metal to metal contact in the exhaust system...I didn't see anything...The exhaust system is tight..
Now, down to the tranny...I'll have to take it back to the shop I guess...Thanks for the replys..
Oh.. BTW I have dual tanks, are the do I have a fuel pump in each tank? Cause it seems my fuel mileage is worse in the front tank than the rear...Maybe I'm losing my mind...
So the sound you hear is not the same one you hear when you turn the key on?
The fuel pump will turn on for about 2 seconds and shut off....it primes the system and doesn't keep running because it doesn't need to pump fuel with the engine off.

OK...MustangGT...I think your right...I started the truck and made sure the switch indicated the forward tank, some noise was there. I reached over and swithed to the rear tank...and then silence, no noise...I did it again...back to the front, it came right back...So I 'd have to say your right about the fuel pump. ....My next question, is the fuel pump in the tank?
Thats what I was afraid of. Can they be rebuilt, or do I just need to replace? Is there a certain part that tends to go bad on the fuel pump or do I just replace the whole thing...? I checked some prices, they seem to hover between 90.00 to 130.00...Not sure whcih I need. I guess I'll have to pull it out to see.
I dont think those small pumps can be rebiult. Some prices may vary because it may or may not include the fuel gauge sending unit. If there is a ton of rust on top of the unit where the fuel lines attatch it would probably be best to replace the whole unit.
