Which A/C compressor?

I have a 70 F100 Ranger with the old cast iron R-12 compressor. Want to go 134a with a new compressor. What model compressor will work? Sources for them and filter/driers etc?

Thanks.

JB

The York compressor will work fine, just change the oil to one compatible with the R134a. IIRC, that compressor takes 6ounces of oil.
You will need to change the orifice valve, and all the hoses in the system, as R134a has smaller molecules that can bleed through perfectly fine R12 hoses. You can use the original replacement filter/drier.

JBoggs, Like Ford_six said change your compressor oil after you have reclaimed any existing R12 left in your system. The existing R12 orifice will work for the new R134A. You can change it if you like or if one is included in the change over kit you purchase. Your existing accumalator tank will work fine as well. I have never had a existing R12 hose leak due to changing refrigerants, but with older hoses this is a good time to replace any that look suspect. If possible leak check your reinstalled system with nitrogen. Remove nitrogen and Pull a good vacum on your system. If you can borrow a micron gauge use it to measure your vacum. If not just let the vacum pump run a hour and that should dehydrate any moisture and remove any noncondensables that entered your system during the change over process or that were already in it. Remove vacum pump and fill system with your new R134A. Then start the truck up and put the a/c on high speed fan and a/c on. Roll down all windows or open the doors. It should have enough in it now to keep it from cycling/shutting off on the low pressure switch until you charge it up. If it is cycling off pretty bad, I open the gauges when the compressor comes on and close them when it shuts off. After several minutes it will have enough in it to keep the low pressure switch contacts closed and continue running. Good luck Charles
