I am preparing to convert from manual to pwr steering. Yesterday I read an archive about what I think was the pwr steering column with no shifter (shifter on the floor). I found one at the salvage yard. I am goig to try to get it this afternoon. This will allow me to convert to power steering and then install a floor shifter. Is this a somewhat rare part?
A lot of trucks have NP or other 4 gear granny trannies with P/S. 73 & up col's are shorter anyway regardless if P/S or not. Like BP66 says, get it as it takes a lot of the grief out of doing the ugrade.

This is what I picked up this afternoon. The power steering box and column came from a '70. The column is for a floor shift truck which I think will be more fun. While I think this will work I think I read to get a '73 and later. Is that just because the '73 and later column is shorter which gives more room? In addition I picked up the back and forth type looped cooler line and a pump but I was not able to find the bracket and the correct pullies. Hopefully I can find the mounting bracket and pullies at another location.
My truck is a '65.
I also picked up a pair of nice zippered door pockets. I think the extra storage space will be nice.
The more research I do the more concerned I become that I might have picked up the wrong column... the box is a Ford. both Box and column appear to be from a '70. Will this be to long in my '65 truck?
It was the 3-speed power steering post I read yesterday which indicated that was the rare type setup. Regardless if what I have works I'll be happy to convert to a floor shifter. Thanks!

If you got all that from a 70, you should be OK. Ford switched from Bendix to Ford boxes from 68-69. The bendix PS unit would bolt up in place of your manual gear. The later ford unit is longer and requires a shorter column, as well as a slightly different angle and point where it goes through the firewall.
Did you get the mounting flanges that cover the hole in the firewall? PS and manual ones are different.
If you got steering box & column from same 70 truck it should work out right for you.
There were two different size steering boxes available between 65 & 68-9. In 73 there is only 1 available. A 73 will not fit with earlier style column as it is about 2" too long.
By 1970 most trucks have the later, 73 type, slipper style, longer steering box, so I presume you have gotten the right one since it all came from the same truck. So I'll say either you have the right one OR you will have an early style Strg Box which takes the longer column, but have the Column anyway.
It's just the earlier [Armstrong] box is not your best choice for P/S as it's a full time-high pressure type. The other, later style is part time medium PSI and the better of the two systems.
Made P/S upgrade on my 65 w/ 4 sp and used the original column, went with shorter steering shaft. Slight modification at firewall, no more than what it would take to make adapter for mounting column to dash; also, did not have to modify harness. This was few years back and never had any problem. If an issue, suggest check with local welding shop estimate cost of shortening column and shaft. Found machine shop that would shorten column for $35. There are also after market columns ordered to length thru many of the Ford parts suppliers.
