99 Expy with AWD

Please help...I recently purchased a 99 Expy with full time AWD. This the first vehicle that I have had with this feature. My problem is this. When I start off from a stop, I get a slipping feel from what I believe to be transmission or transfer case. I took it to a reputable transmission shop the other day and they were baffled as well. I feel what appears to be (3) slips, which I have been guessing to be the individual wheels locking in as I drive off. Is this a normal thing to feel with the AWD feature? Or should I be looking for something more severe?

Depending on how many miles you have on it I'd say start with draining the tranny and replacing the filter inside. I have a 99 5.4 with AWD and I believe it calls for this service about every 30,000 miles. I purchased my Expy used and around 60,000 miles I was experienceing some vibrations here and there and doing this made it all go away. I have about 127,000 on it now and plan to do it again in the very near future. I left mine go a little longer due to never towing with this vehicle. I see from your other post you intend to attempt towing with yours so I would stick with every 30,000 to be safe.

this vehicle i bought used with 111,000 miles on it and I cannot be sure that the fluid and filter was ever changed in it to date. I have heard that if you have not done so before then you should not do it as you are opening up a can of worms. Is this too many miles to do so if its never been done before. I love this vehicle compared to my 97. Amazing what two years does for the ride and comfort level.

What about the fluid in the transfer case? How do you change that and what type of fluid is in that as well? And how about the rear differential? I know that is not the problem, but if I am changing fluids I may as well do that one too.

You should be fine with changing the tranny fluid. I'd change the front/rear differential, and transfer case fluid. Make sure the proper fluids are used which are listed in the owner's manual.

This vehicle did not come any owners manuals since it was purchased used. I do have it for my 97 though. I am sure they most likely use the same fluids?
