Actually its called a neutral start switch.

The switch doesn't kill anything.

The connection for it is at the firewall.
You can follow the wiring harness up from the transmission to where it connects at the center of the firewall.

White/pink is one of them
Black/red stripe is another.

4 or 5 wires total

Either a brown or grey connector

I was under the impression that; if the switch goes bad, the engine will click, but never start?! I have paper clipped a '82 Ford Tempo (shorted out) the switch which worked for a couple years until I had the opportunity to pick up a new switch at the junkyard. If your vehicle is starting in gear, probably means that somebody has also done much the same thing. Follow the wires towards the firewall until you find some electric tape. A switch should be readily available at any junkyard.
Hope this helps???

I do not know the "right" answer for you here. Sorry. I do remember my first car, I tossed the 6 and the three on the tree for a small v8 with a 4spd. I had a problem with remembering to push in the clutch b4 starting; so I installed a push button under the dash. The car would not start until I pushed the button, which reminded me to place the clutch in first. Stupid, YES! Worked for me though....

On the 79 the NSS is on the side of the transmission.

go under and follow the wires up.

I suspect they have installed another trans that's why you are having problems.

That's the wiring just below the rubber connector on the left side of the air cleaner assembly.

Yes we put in a AOD that matches the engine but there are no wires hooked to it so I am thinking they spliced the starter wire together had not even worried about it til I started instaling my remote starter and decided to hook it up for extra safety
oh and i can't spell LOL
