You could always get a 460 and stroke it out to 496 and play with all the other basic things to make it go.

A 410 isn't that difficult, as I have recently learned. You'll going to need new pistons, anyway, no matter what you rebuild, and 410 pistons are no more expensive that 390 pistons. You will need a crank from a 428, and rods from either a 390 or 428, but they're out there. I just paid $275 (total) for a .010/.010 428 crankshaft and a set of matched rods. The pistons I bought were less than $100 for the set. I'm having my stock heads reworked, so the only other big parts outlays I have are an Edelbrock intake ($185), headers ($285) and a carb (not purchased yet, but $250-350). I also spent $125 for a Pertronix Ignitor II and flamethrower coil. My total parts outlay so far is about $1000 with gaskets. By the time I'm all done, with all the machine shop work on the heads and block (including oiling mods), spin balancing, new cam, lifters, springs, carb, etc., I expect to have less than $2,000 into the motor. My tranny is fine, so no money needs to be spent there. In the end, I should have a better-than-new 350+ hp motor with awesome torque for a very reasonable price.
