Another bumper question, what are you using?

The previous owner of my 49 had made his own bumper. The actual work on the bumper was pretty good and looked better than anything else he did on the truck. I am looking to add some kind of rear bumper. I have a pretty good wrecking yard close by that I can get a bumper from. I will also add a reciever hitch (I already have the parts for that)

The questions I have are;

What are you using for a rear bumper?

Any ideas on what production car or truck bumper might look good on the rear of a 49? (keep in mind that I am a tightwad)

Thanks all
Bobby

I don't know how it would look on your F1, but I have a pic of a mid 80's El Camino rear bumper on the rear of an F100 that I thought looked real good and gives built in taillights to boot.

You have mail!

AX,

Thanks for sending me the pic! That is an awesome looking truck. I was picturing the older El Camino bumpers with the 2 round lights on either side. It looks like he might have cut the bumper down and recessed it a bit. All in all its a great looking package on that truck.

I plan on using a set of tailights from a 1946 Chrylser Town and Country on my truck.

Again, thanks for the pic.
Bobby

FWIW -

The 78-87 El Camino rear bumpers come with and without fancy rubber strips on them. They have the taillights mounted as an intregal part of them. The bumpers are easy to buy new for about $200.00 (not that Bobby ever bought anything new) but the taillight lens are hard/impossible to get as I recall.

You should be able to find the same bumper on the Malibu stationwagon as well.

Regards,

Bobby. I'm going to make a bumper. I'll be moving the stock bumper brackets forward a couple of inches to get the bumper closer the bed, then using 2x4 box tubing. I thought about 2x6, but it just looks to large. The ends will get a curved end, similar to a stock bumper, and I'll be cutting a relief in the center for the licence plate. I may run the backup lights next to the license plate, haven't decided yet. The whole thing will have a similar appearance to stock, except for the plate and lights. Both bumpers will be painted a cream color, so I'll be in the market for an unpainted stock front bumper soon.

Bobby,

The old 49/50 Plymouth/Dodge bumpers looked great on our old trucks but they are getting hard to find. Being out west you might find some of these easier than you would in other parts of the country. I still see them in swap meets occasionally. I'm putting a set of polished SS bumpers from Dennis Carpenter on mine...I like shiny.

Ferguson beat me to it. The station wagon version was the same as the camino. My mom had a 79 mallibu wagon when I was in high school.

I have seen several of them on mid 70s (other brand) step side trucks over the years. I always thought they looked really good too. They look custom made unless you know what the came off of.

Bobby, I may have spend the money and go Vern's route but I also want a receiver hitch. Has anyone done an F-1 with the SS rear bumper and a hitch? Any pictures?

Bobby, what kind of receiver are you adding? I assume it isn't a Class 2 or 3, because those usually attach directly to the frame. Does the receiver you have attach directly to the bumper?

I'm using the bumper that came on my trruck, one of those ubiquitous step-bumpers with the name of a Ford dealer stamped on it and a hole for a ball in the middle. Woe to the import that kisses it! I think it's 1/4" plate.

I have the stock front bumper on my 51F1, it seems as though most of the newer auto bumpers up here are higher than mine. I had a my (Corn Binder) grill dented awhile back in the Home Depot parking lot. I think about the only thing around these days as low as my front bumper would be a lowrider.

My Panel has the Stock Bumper on it with a 3/8 l shaped plate welded to it for the ball hitch. I'm thinking about keeping it, I will be lowering the front while keeping the rear stock, should take out any radiator except Semi's and large 4 wheelers.

I have a hitch on my Explorer, it's one of those that you can remove the ball but it leaves the post there. A few years ago some Dufus bumped me from the rear in stop and go traffic, I got out and his front bumper had gone over the hitch. This jerk was screaming at me for hurting his car, then he asked what the He** I was going to do.
I got in my Truck flipped it to 4WD, thru it in low and punched it, the front bumper stayed with me for about 40 feet before spinning to the side of the road.

I've seen various versions of bumpers on both the F1 and F100's. I still like the stock ones best. I also like what Randy Jack did in tucking the sides (shorting the stock bumper) to align with the bed. I'm running stock on both front and rear on my 56. although I've tucked both of them closer to the body. Take a look at the Foose F100. They did a nice job putting oval taillights into the stock bumper. My best advise here bobby is Open a few frosty beverages, grab a few truck magazines and have at it. Just a note... Fabrication can often end up costing more than buying the original part (if money is an issue).

I've used this same design over the years on my 48, my 52 and now the 56. Did not cost a lot to do, Just welding, grinding, and you can paint, powder, or plate. Other views in gallery.
