Working with local dealer to order new King Ranch. Dealer wants refundable deposit, but does not want to commit to a firm price. Says they will negoiate once the order is placed and a VIN is issued.
Is this typical?
Thinking that invoice pricing can be used to establish base point and negoiations could be based on invoice pricing for all standard and optional equipment.
I've never heard of it being done that way- sounds like the dealer is trying to hedge his bet. If he's working EXTREEEEEEEEEEMELY close to invoice, then I guess I can't blame him. He may be trying to insure that he doesn't get stuck with a price increase. Now, if he's talking, say, $1000 to $1500 over invoice- well, then I don't know what's going on. We quote a firm price at our dealership up-front, including the rebate (ATTN: MODERATOR! I'm stating a fact- not trying to SELL this guy anything! Please don't revoke my status!). Check out FordDirect.com to see if there any other dealers near you that wil quote you a firm price. I wish I knew why some of these dealers are so afraid to give you the information you desire. If anything, I probably OVERLOAD customers with info, but that's just me.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 15-Nov-02 AT 08:37 PM (EST)]They have given me an asking price at slightly above MSRP. When I first started this process we were talking few hundred over invoice, but know they want to want till they have a VIN.

Since I haven't put any method of contacting me in my profile, no one can accuse me of trying to sell you a truck. I don't work in the town that I live in, and there is no Ford dealer in my home town. Besides, you're not going to drive all the way across North America to buy a truck from me. With that being said, our dealership sells EVERY new truck/ SUV/ van AT FACTORY INVOICE. The only exception is the Lightning- we discount them $500 off sticker. This is our regular pricing policy, 365 days a year. So, there are dealers that will sell you what you want at the price you want- you just have to find them. I could tell you my dealership's name, but then the moderator would have to kill me...
than you would not be getting screwed thet much if you payed a littel more??
i think if you pay invoice you would not be doing to bad but if you can get it down any farther than go for it but keep talkin and just offer them a price and tell them ull walk if you doint get it for that!

I've found CarsDirect to be pretty damn accurate. As for talking them down below invoice, keep in mind that the smart negotiator knows when to keep saying "no," but also knows when to say "yes." Some people think it's smart to make a super-low offer, but I can't waste my time with customers like that. Most other salespeople won't either; they just won't even take you seriously as a buyer. If a salesperson laughs at your offer and won't even take it to the manager, then you know you're too low. Look at what CarsDirect is offering for prices; if you're well below that, then you're probably just spinning your tires. Yo have to ask yourself: what is my time worth? EVERYONE wants a good deal, but would you drive 100 miles to a different grocery store just because their steak is 2 cents a pound cheaper? Of course not. But that's just what you're doing when you drive 100 miles to save $50 on a new truck. It just doesn't make sense to me.

Also keep in mind where you are going to get the truck serviced. If you are going to service it your local dealership then buy from there. Sometimes saving the extra $200 will hurt you in the long run. Also remember that the salesmen is going to do whatever it takes to get you to buy the truck from him because if you don't buy he doesn't get paid. Every dealership pays the same thing for the trucks so both dealerships should be able to get you the same price. Good Luck with your truck and don't be to hard on the salesmen because I am sure he is trying.
Use the MSRP/Invoice of an existing truck in their inventory. Work figures that way. There may be a few asdjustments to be made... but not enough to change the agreed on price by a large amount. Insist on working prelim figures before you go any further. Any reputable dealership will do this.
When I ordered my truck, my dealer gave me a price. I had to put down a percentage of the accessories that I ordered, that was it. I put down $3000. I ordered a loaded 2000 F-250 Lariat SC,LB,4x4,ORP. I definately had a confirmed price on my order!!
I was told that to place an order they wanted something down. 1000.00 was aceptable and in my case also refundable.
True or not ??> I was told that until they got the build sheet {called the Dora} that a firm price was not possible. Normally they are quite close to the final cost. In my case since I had priced a 7.3L diesel but was too late to get one the cost went up a bit {6.0L higher, plus chassis was a bit higher too
I think you would be close to presume about 1000-3000 higher for the final cost.
Once the build {or Dora} is accepted at the factory {probably generates the Dora} then the price as far as I know is firm/set and does not change.
That is my experience and if the dealer puts their order into the factory regurally {at least weekly} then you should get a Dora / build sheet back and know final costs in about 2 week.
