Hello. New to the forums. Glad to be here. I'm having an issue with my 2000 Ford Expedition XLT 4WD 5.4L. It's only got about 40K miles on it. Kept well. Lately it's had a hard time starting. Battery is good and the motor cranks but she doesn't fire up. This has only happened about 3-4 times in the last month but just started a month ago. It has only happened when she's been sitting a couple hours after running and being shut down. After she starts she runs perfectly and no other abnormalities. After failing to start I've waited about 30min then it started right up. No gas smell during the no start. Those are the clues. Any ideas before I haul it into the dealer?
Could be the IAC (idle air control valve). Check it and clean it. I'm told these valves may stick and result is the car just turns and turns and turns w/o turning over. Same year mustangs have the same problem.
I recently had the same problem on my wife's 2000 excursion with the v-10 gas. I post this because the engines are very similar. She would crank it over and if it would start she would have to hold the accelorator down for a while or the vehicle would just die. After 15 minutes or so (and sounding like she wanted to drag race everyone beside her at the stop lights on her way to work) it would start working properly. I asked questions and got the impression the AIC could fail mechanically or the selinoid could go bad. Just to keep my wife from being stranded I payed for a new part and put it on myself. It is not too bad to install. The old one I took out was really dirty and I'm not so sure that if I had given it a good cleaning it may have worked just fine. New one was supposed to cost ~ $90 but the parts place gave me a break and it cost ~ $50. Good luck and I hope this is a good fix.
