any help would be great, thx all
1984 f150 4x4 4.9l tfi eecIV i just want less problems and an esier way of fixing and cheaper way so in the future if something wrong happens with the ignition or fuel,it will be way esier to diognoss it ya'know?
Probably the best thing you can do is to switch the ignition to the duraspark 2 (DS2). This system is easily found on ford vehicles from about '75 to '83 or so. You'll need the distributor, harness & module. Everything except the harness can be found off the shelf at most automotive stores. Ask for parts for a '79 300. Supposedly you could still get the connections from ford & make your own harness (don't know for certain on that one). Or you can pull everything off of a truck in a junk yard. Check the ford six site (www.fordsix.com) as one of the guys there wrote a very nice article on this procedure. Keep in mind that this is for the smaller ford six, but it should be a great guide. Due to the fact that you have an '84 (like mine), you might be able to simply 'plug & play' as the connections might still be there (some '84s had the DS2).
If you replace the ignition system, you might as well replace the carb. The TFI system is called a feedback carb system (almost like a primative EFI) & the carb won't work all that well with the older distributor. To keep it simple you can just simply get a carter YF from the early '70s. You could also look into a 2 or 4-bbl carb, but that will take some mods, or a different intake.
Those 2 things should help out quite a bit. Good luck.

Sell it and get a pre 75 model easy fix and in my opinion you geta better truck
I totally disagree with that statement i think that the 80 - 86 trucks are just as good as the 73-79 ford trucks. plus lets not forget ITS FORD MADE its gonna last forever either way
well you can convert the ignition to a duraspark 2. u need the distributor, module, wiring and duraspark 2 coil. the tfi coil wont work with the duraspark conversion. i had that problem on my 86 mustang i did the same swap. i hate computer controlls on those carbed engines. they might have been nice when they were new, but with age they deteriorate and the older much simpler and easier to fix (and cheaper) duraspark swap is a great thing to do. i believe the egr can be hooked up to ported vacuum to open the valve. they probably have a ecm controlled solenoid controling it stock. if u have a mixture controll solonoid on the carb then u should change it to an older non eec carb. you will need to hook up the older distributors vacuum advance line so u have vacuum advance. i had problems with my eec 4 to duraspark 2 conversion with the white wire coming out of the module. with it hooked up like the stock wiring diagram the engine didnt turn off with the key, so i left it unhooked. this should be a straightforward conversion as long as u find a donor truck with all the parts. u might wanna check on the coil resistor i dont no if they use the same one. good luck.
how do i pull out all the wires,do i just cut off the wire pack that goes through the fire wall to the ecm or is this a bad desicion?thx oldfordtrucksrule
well u could unplug the ecm, that way u dont have to cut anything. funny i didnt read 63 redtudor's reply until after i posted mine, it was almost exactly like mine lol. i wouldnt cut any wire bundles just to be safe. once u undo the wiring to the eec4 ignition and carb, the ecm isnt really doing anything. i would just leave the ecm in place but unhook all power leads to it.
I've done this mod on an 84 f150 300 six and a 83 with 351w. First all the cumputer stuff is in the same harness unplug the ecm seperate the harness from the truck you can unplug every thing just pull it out get a ds2 distributor from an earlier model ( I used the stuff from an 81) both the trucks I did had a ignition module on the fender with two wires comming from the firewall from the ignition switch on wire has 12 volts when the key is in the start position the othe has 7.5 with the key in the run position.Get a ds2 module, there is a great picture of the ds2 system in the 73-79 forum right now.If you can't find a harness for the module to the distributor you can make one its only four wires I used a trailer light harness and connectors. Use an earlier carb. Plug yuor egr into a coolant controled vacum switch and ported vacum and you'er done good luck
