I just bought this truck a couple of weeks ago and I am happy with it. My question is after crawling around underneath, I found what appears to be a left over piece of a rubber sleeve between the drive shaft and the 4X4 transaxel. It was held on with two metal bands, one on each side. One of the bands has been spinning around for what appears to be a long period of time, not holding anything. The other band was holding what remains of the rubber sleeve right where the drive shaft connect to a U-joint. Does anyone know what that rubber sleeve was for? Thanks.
Do you know what the dust boot is for? Probably a stupid question, but I am not sure I need to replace it. It was ripped off and appears to have been gone for a long time. Thanks.
Actually the slip yoke moves back and forth as the suspension extends and retracts and essentially lengthens and/or shortens the driveshaft. That sliding part (the yoke) rides on a greased surface. Now this grease is suppose to be permanent (per Ford) but we all know that ain't true...anyway...since your boot seems to be missing it would be in the best interest of the proper operation of the driveshaft to replace it.
Since replacing will require dropping the drive shaft, you might as well lube the slip yoke prior to buttoning the thing back up. Good 'ole high performance synthetic grease should do the trick.
