Help! Oil Filter Stuck

Changing oil today, drilled hole in filter to drain, started to take off filter, it turned about 1/4 turn then nothing- stuck, wont budge. i have mangled the canister pretty good trying to muscle it off. Anyone have any ideas or experience cutting the filter off? Its a Napa 1734. Thanks- Jim

Righty tighty - Lefty loosey. Sorry, had to do it. I know it happens but it is hard to imagine that a lubricated before installed item that flows oil would lock up like that. If you did not install it, maybe it was cross threaded??? Hope you get it.

In 100k miles, I've only had one filter not twist off with a filter wrench. Like you, I also jab a hole in the bottom to pre-drain the filter. So there I was with a pass through filter that wont come off... After failing to manhandle it I started thinking... thats when I ended up taking a long screwdriver and punching it through the whole filter. It worked for me..

On my Cat I have to use a chain type filter wrench. Works great there, so it would probably do just fine on a PSD, but this advice is probably a little late.

Mine got stuck so tight one time, I hd to cut the filter off and then chisel the top loose. I learned to brake the seal before punching a hole. Doing the seal first will at least leave it drivable, whole first your kind of stuck.

One more thing, also hard to crush the can if it is filled with oil.

Cool

I gave up-theyre coming to tow it now. I feel like an a**. This never happened to me before. Live & learn. This will be the most expensive oil change ever. I will definately loosen it before I drill next time. Thanks for the quick replies & suggestions. Jim

Another good idea is to loosen the filter before poking a hole in it just in case it's stubborn. Keeps you from being stuck with no ride.

Happy ending to a bad day-the tow truck driver asked me if I wanted him to give it a shot. To make a long story short, he got it off ! Said they do their own filter changes and have seen everything. Took him about 10 min. Total cost: $100 [$85 'emergency service call' price + $15 thankyou tip]. I'll take it. The tow alone was gonna cost me $129.
