1972, 360, pickup, alternator question

There are two wires to the alternator on this truck that come out of a black colored gadget about four inches long with a bolt hole in a metal clip in the middle of it that has all of the appearance of being a ground clip. My question is as follows. Does the ground clip on that gadget go to the remaining post on alternator, the one with the white plastic around it, or is it simply grounded to the case on the alternator. I hooked a wire from the clip to the post on the alternator and it had enough electricity going through it to make the 12 ga. wire get hot. As it is, the alternator will run the vehicle without the battery but when I hook up the low battery it has a weak spark. I suspect if I left the wire hooked between the ground clip and the third post on the alternator--a new rebuilt--it would get too hot. This is my son's pet project and he took this stuff off so long ago he doesn't remember how the wires were attached, except for the obvious two. I need assistance on this mouldy oldie. Thanks. Jay

Hi and welcome to FTE! Head on down to the 67-72 Truck forum or maybe even the Electrical Systems/Wiring forum. You should get lots of help there. Enjoy!
