I know there have been some folks with the same problem's that I am having, I have searched. I have checked and double checked all bushings, tie rods, bearings and everything that can be looked at our touched. Okay know that i have that out of the way here is my problem, 88 f150 4x4 300-6 engine, 31-10.50x15 mud star tires. driving my truck is like riding on a roller coaster. It will go from white line to white line,( YES ). If you are holding the wheel driving down the road the truck will, start wandering everywhere i almost have to slow down to about 20-25 mph to stop it. The steering seems "heavy" if that is way to explain it, and it also seems to 'stick' in which ever direction you turn. I am thinking that maybe the box is bad.
I pretty much had the same problem with mine.I thought the box was bad but it wasn't.I had two problems. My balljoints were bad. They were rusted up so when I jacked it up to check them they didn't move.I would turn and it wanted to keep turning.I jacked it up again and started to beat on everything. That's when I saw them move.My other problem was tires.I don't know if you just put yours.I put a new set of firestones on mine and even after replacing everything on the front end it drove like it was drunk.Aligned it twice with no difference. It wandered and pulled no matter what.Changed tires and it was like new.
I have an 80 F-150 4x4 that is showing the same problem (wandering). I will be replacing the ball joints soon and hope this will clear the problem. I know the steering box is good, tires are good, but the balljoints are shot. Lift the front of your truck, and facing your wheel, see if it will move in and out by having one hand at the top and one hand at the bottom (not side to side)
Try car-part.com for a replacement steering box, if you find it may actually be the real culprit.
I just replaced the wheel bearing's, i checked the ball joints the seemed tight, there wasn't any slack in them. How hard are the ball joints to replace? the tires were just replaced about 3 weeks ago, it did before and after, but more so after new tires. I am guessing that the newer more aggresive tires, make the problem more pronounced. But I am wondering about how much money I am going to have to spend, to fix the problem. If I am going to start throwing parts at it, then i am going to consider a front axle swap.
