Road trip question/Cali bound

Leaving from Houston to Cali Thursday and need to see what the thoughts are on my cooling system, 104,000 mls on engine 2000 mls on new tranny rearend serviced at 70,000 mls. Cam shaft sensor replaced at 80,000. Ford wants 140.00 to service cooling system. Have any of you guys serviced cooling system @100,000. Any other hints on things other than oil, air filter, fuel filter.

Well, at this point it may be moot. Are you leaving tomorrow/thurs? Has it ever been serviced? Have you tested it? If all appears well, I would be inclined to just go with it.

I generally like to do non-regular periodic maintenance well before I take a trip in order to give myself some oops/darnit recovery time.

One more thought, taking your truck to the dealer might be a trip stopper as they have been known to discover things. Not always, but it does happen.

Well took off the 20" wheels and went with the stock rims and practical new tires, changed the oil & filter and also the belt that is stock. Will go with the cooling system as is. Will be leaving Houston Thursday night for the 21hr drive hope all goes well. Ran great last weekend to Haringen Tx with a new tranny with 100mls on it.

I'm starting to learn that lesson. Good to have time to road test it before you're out in the middle of nowhere with your family. I still end up doing some things just before a trip, but I also carry a good set of tools and hoses, clamps, fluid etc..

Cali trip went fine no problems except through Arizona. Excursion kept shutting off and didnt find out why. Drove 45 mls like I was in nascar warming up the tires in a caution. 110 outside temp and drove the trip back fine after that. Carry another fuel filter just in case is what I found out on this trip. $300 tow fee if I would have gave up.

Are you saying the fuel filter caused your problems? And what "shutoff" problems did you experience?

Driving at 80mph @110 temp outside and the engine would just shut down. I would rock the truck on and off the road and on to the shoulder and rpms and engine would pick up speed again. Finally I pulled over in dateland Arizona and pulled the filter out not having another one and 50 mls away from anyone who could help me, wife and 4 kids not knowing what to do got back in truck and luck that rocking back and forth got through the problem. Still dont know if it was fuel , filter or pump or even fuel was getting to hot. The fuel when I pulled the filter out was hot after sitting with the hood up for over an hour.
