Hard Start Question

My 3208 Cat in my motor home can sit for 6 or 7 months and start with less than one revolution without the aid glow plugs. But my PSD will crank for 2 to 4 seconds to start. I consider this hard to start. Howcum?

I wish I knew, mine starts the same and my buddies with the Dodge Cummins always tease me, their Rams start up in about a half a crank. I assumed it had something to do with the fuel slowly back drawing back to the tank, but then I remembered I have an electric fuel pump, so I've just starting accepting it.

It has to do with the design of the fuel delivery system. The Cats and Cummins both have the older style injector pumps. They are able to build injection pressure at the nozzles right away.
The PSD injectors are driven by very high pressure engine oil and that pressure has to be built first by the HPOP first before the injectors are able to fire.
That sort of system has some great advantages over the injector pump style of fuel delivery. Mainly you now have electronic control of injector timing, fuel rate during injection, etc. Disadvantages are a longer cranking time to get it running.

Kwik, that is what I sorta thought. That it probably had something to do with the HPOP. but I had to ask anyway. That goes to show you that reading here even teaches old dogs something new. So, no one has come up with a system to preload the injectors for those of us that want an one revolution start?

I suppose all it would take is a high pressure ELECTRIC oil pump in paralell with the HPOP. I don't know that you would want to pressure the system ALL the time

Lets see, I used to know where to get aircraft hydraulic packs military surplus.

Would an extra source qualify as BIG OIL??

Ramsmoker has already done that, but has been quiet about whether it's been good or not.
