Need some advice??????

I am interested in the 06 V-10. I tow a 30' wildcat Travel Trailer about 16 weekends a year and for two weeks worth of vacation. I currently own a 04 6.0 F-250. Which I have been having sensor issues , loss of power and now it looks like the turbo is going. Yea great for me!!! I am working with Ford to buy back the truck hopefully. My dealer is saying the 06 powerstokes are very good now with all the bugs worked out. Not sure that I want to give that a try. How good is the V-10 while towing 10,000 lbs. It looks like the 4.30 gear is the way to go. I am not worried to much about milage as the 6.0 is only giving me 13-14 mpg and 9-10 towing. From what I have read here it looks like the new 3v V-10 would get that. Anyways even if ford wont buy the truck back I am thinking about trading for the v-10 and take my lumps and chalk it up to a learning experiance. I have to have a superduty as they are the best looking trucks out there. And they are great trucks. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Also do you think a f-350 would be better than the f-250 with the v-10??

The F350 will give you alot more payload over the F250 but for the most part they are the same trucks. One advantage to the F250 is it's stock 17" wheels. The tires are only 31.6" in diameter so you would get a better advantage out of your gear ratio. The F350 uses 18" wheels with 33.2" diameter tires. These are optional on the F250. 4.30 gears are what you want. I think you are a little high in your MPG estimates. Expect 10-12mpg city and 12-14mpg highway solo and with 10,000 pounds in tow I would say 7-9 mpg. Stay after Ford. They are used to buying back 6.0's.

Towing 10,000lbs with the new V10 3v makes for a happy V10. Keep in mind that the V10 likes to rev in the 3500-4500+ rpm range, so do not worry getting it there and keeping it on long hills. The 4.30 gears are the only way to go with your needs.

Here might be your biggest problem: Finding an '06 V10. Not sure what config you want, but good luck finding one. You may end up ordering an '07 and getting what you want. YES, the '07 is a limited run...and looks and feels like the '06. The all new SD will be an '08.

Good luck!

My '01 handles my 34' Travel Trailer just fine... Fully loaded the trailer weighs in at nearly 10K lbs. Like Biz says, the V10 does love to be in that 3500-4500 rpm range. But it sounds so sweet when it is in that range.

I have no problem keeping speed on just about any hill in MN/WI areas. I have the 3.73 gears, and do wish that I had it geared higher, so if you're looking, try to get the higher ratio. Towing wise you'll be grateful. Plus it makes for quicker starts to burn the Hemi's at the stop lights.

Check the MPG sticky thread at the top of the section... That should give you a good idea of mpg. Towing will probably be a little lower than the 9-10, at least pulling 10K lbs. I typically will get 8, give or take.

Good luck with the buy back thing!!
