I have a 302 which won't start "all of a sudden" this spring. I've tried all the basics and appear to have good fuel supply, a decent (not great) spark, and air.
I did see a puff of smoke on the passengers side once this spring, but don't know where it came from.
Can a starter relay keep my engine from starting? My starter motor turns, the engine cranks, no popping, sputtering, backfiring, anything.
The puff of smoke came from the right wheel well area, and I know my relay is over there. I've replaced the entire engine (which I was going to do anyway) with a 347, and just tried to start it today...nothing. Only thing I can think of is the starter relay.
Just wondering if I should replace it and if I do what will I notice as different.
Doesn't like the relay (I presume you're talking about the solenoid?) is the problem. If the starter cranks well and and the engine seems to be spinning at the normal speed when cranking, I'd be looking elswhere. If it's new engine just installed, chances are that the timing's off but you should atr least be getting something, popping or the like.
Is this an EFI or carbed engine?
Sound's like the puff of smoke you saw was with the old engine still in place, but it ran after that?
I had done a lot on the old engine to see if timing was a problem and still never got it to pop. I even replaced the whole timing set-up so I knew when TDC was. On the new engine, I did everything I could to make sure that when I first turned the key, timing was 100% correct.
I really didn't think it was the starter relay/solenoid but had to ask. One thing I'm going to do is to get new plugs with a longer reach. Edelbrock recommended a 3/4" reach and I'm ony at 1/2". Might even get new wires too.
It's a carbed engine.
The smoke was when the old engine was in. No, it didn't run after that.
