Hi all!
A couple of weeks ago I replaced the stock cam in my '92 150 4.9l with a new cam from CRANE #500-511. This is mild cam that was recommended by the techs at Crane. It DID NOT affect the EEC computer at all. In fact the engine runs better now than it ever has. More low end torque and smoother running at highway speeds. Gas mileage increased from 12 to 15mpg as well. I found that it ran the best on on 89 octane fuel with the timing set at approx 14 deg. BTDC.
It was a major concern for me on how it would work with the computer, but as I said it works great! I also used the lifters that crane recommended with this cam. I don't remember what the number was other than it stated they were an "anti-pump up" lifter. Approx. $80.00 for 12 from JEGS. The cam was a expensive baby though $245.00 from Crane. Shop around, I got it cheaper from Jegs as well.
Please list ALL modifications to your truck as well as the transmision, rear end gear, tire size, and anything else that would have an affect on performance.
The ooomph that it has is a little more than what it had. I believe the high ratio rears that are in it are a hinderance for quick, off the line performance. But it sure runs better than before!
I don't notice any difference in the top end other than it runs better/smoother with a pleasant purr....I don't really want any more top end, it's a truck. It'll run 75 without any problem on the interstate. Scared to try any faster due to possibility of a blue light special. Being a firefighter/paramedic, my employer has butt hole tendencies when it comes to tickets....it could cost me 10% of my salary.
