Exclamation Rear Window Problem

Currently, my rear window is not operating, that is to say neither the key or switch moves the window. The circuits seem to be running fine, and all the power is plugged in accordingly. Although, I'm not quite sure how to fix the window completely, i was wondering is there a manual way to crank the window into the down and or up position. The truck is a 91 XLT 302. Thanks

There is no way to crank by hand. But if your motor is not shot, you can pull the panel on the gate and wire power directly to the motor. I had to do this once until I could get it fixed. There is a plug from the motor at the bottom center of the gate. Just unplug it and hook ground and power to it and it should move. If its the wrong way, reverse the leads. But I would'nt put it the whole way down as it gets hard to work on. I would do some testing at the front switch first. Its the easiest to check. If you dont get power and ground on the output leads when you switch it, the problem is there. (When you switch it the other way, the output will be reversed) Alot of times the wires break in the rubber tube leading to the gate. If it breaks there, it wont work from either location.

My rear window?? quit, runs slowly/, shattered/ went south/ is stupid/ is possessed/ stuck down in the rain? how do I fix it?

There is a wealth of information on this issue because it seems to be such a common problem with so many of these trucks.? Perhaps the best and most informative site I have found is this one regarding replacement of the tailgate.?

http://ylobronc.users.superford.org/tailgate/tailgate.html

This site deals with and lists parts for repairing a dead or dying rear window mechanism.

http://www.off-road.com/ford/bigbroncos/tech/window-fix.html

A thorough explanation could be shown here but its been said before many times over. The recommendation is to check the aforementioned sites and search the Big Bronco forum for further answers.

Check out this link....there is a load of quality info in here that pertains directly to your issue.

Also....if you can take a known good 12V battery into the back of the truck and run two jumpers to the pig tail that comes off the window motor.....like the post above says one way will make the glass go up and then switch the polarity and the glass will go down. If the motor just spins and the glass dont move or need help to move, then its the three torque pins that are shot.....them you can find in the HELP! section of the auto parts store.

But before you do any of this just push real hard on the top left hand side of the tailgate.....thats where the safety switch is and its a known weak point....so you may have to convince it that the gate is closed by shoving real hard on the top left corner.

Hey guys, thanks for all your help. I wired a battery to the plug and got the window to work. Sorry, i was trying to sort through your messages, does this mean my motor is shot?

NO.....if the motor turns, and will move the window up and down its still good. You need to check that link I posted and look hard at the safety switch or the harness where it goes from the TG to the side of the bed on the drivers side (left side).

But check out the link that will help you quite a bit I think.

I have a 96 bronco with the rear power window motor shot. There is power to the tailgate key switch and their is power to the motor but the motor will not turn or make a noise. My question is how do I remove the motor in order to replace it? I see 2 places where it appears the motor is screwed into the gear mechanism with star type screws. Ive read in this forum where guys drill thru the steel to reach the screws but the motor mounting screws inside my tailgate do not face the tail gate they are facing horizontal to the tailgate. How do I get acplace it?

First try this.....unplug the window motor from the tailgate harness. Now take a known good battery into the back of the truck with you and introduce 12V DC to the window motor, then reverse the polarity, and see if the glass moves at all. By doing this you can check the motor itself, and if the motor is good you will not need to remove it. Then you can check (or jump it out like many many others have done) the safety switch that prevents the glass from moving in the TG is open.....that switch is a well known weak point.

After you have done that stuff, then start looking into replacing the window motor......no?

Speaking of this problem. I have discovered that the lacth dose not even work on the driver side. and of course this is why I have to push that side in to use it. Anybody know where I can get a new one or a decent price

thanks for responding ...I'll try a 12 volt dc current to the motor...the reason I jumped to the conclusion that it is the motor is because I pressed a test light point into the motor pig tail wire and while holding that I pushed in the key switch with my other hand and observed the light go on then off again when I released the key switch ..I then concluded there is power being devlievered to the motor.

Test the motor with a known good 12Dc battery. That will tell you for sure if the problem is the motor or not. There are two wires coming off the motor......connect one side of the battery (could be either pos or neg it dont matter) to one of the leads and the other side of the batter to the other, and see what you get....then reverse the wires and see what you get.......then post back here with your findings.

ok tested the motor with the 12volt battery out of my pickup and nothing happened just the sound of the current arcing across the contact point and thats it. I'm pretty sure the motor is fried. I have no clue how to get it out from between the panel openings..any thoughts and suggestions would be apprecaited

Good advice Streetgang,
There is lots of reason's for the window not working.
I never had to replace the motor, but have had to splice the harness were it bend's were you shut the tailgate.
