I am hoping that you guys could help me out. I need to replace the flexplate on my '72 F-250.
I am wondering if anyone could give me some pointers on how to drop the transmission with little fuss. It is a c6 tranny mated to a 390 engine. Could you also give the torque specs on the flexplate.
Also what manual (haynes, clymer ect..) would help me out the most when i'm working on my truck?

I've never had to drop the tranny on my truck yet, so I can't give you much advice on that part. As far as the manuals go, the absolute best is a set of Ford shop manuals. They take you step by step for dissasembly and reassembly. Sometimes you can find them on ebay... and a short while ago someone posted a link where you can purchase either a cd or reprints of the shop manuals (Im not sure...which).
First, don't "drop the tranny" Use a jack. LOL. All kidding aside it's just a nuts and bolts job. Remove the drive shaft, shift linkage, crossmember, torque converter bolts, and bell housing bolts. Lower it out with a transmission jack if you have access to one. You can also rent them. 80 lbs ft. is plenty tight.
just a little input...do you have a 4x4???i found it easier on mine to pull the engine...less work...although if you don't have access to a cherry picker, or if it is a 2wd, then drop the tranny....
My clutch is starting to get to the point where it can't get adjusted anymore, so it may be time to put a new clutch in. Ironically, I am gonna need an engine rebuild soon... so when it comes time to yank the engine I'll install a new clutch... nice easy access! Yeah, I also looked at pulling the trans out, but I agree on the 4x4 it would be so much easier to just pull the engine.
Thanks for the input. I will be getting one of those shop manuals as soon as I have a chance. I will be using a 2 1/4 ton floor jack to lower my tranny. By the way my truck is 2 wheel drive.
