Drove for about 45mins today and after i turned it off it kept running....very rough for about 5 secs. what could be the cause of this. Recently had a complete tuneup done. Didnt rebuild the carb but i did open it up and clean out the jets and bowl(full of crap)
The engine is a 400 and it also has a bad hesitation off idle... could this be a timing issue, as far as i know the timing has never been messed with. I dont have a temp guage either so i cant be sure if the engine is running hot.
a lot of issues to look at...and I'm sure you will get some good help- but need to elliminate fuel issues- and know what the motor is doing ie vacuum etc.
BTW: Welcome to fte...you can search this and other forums and find a lot of info on your topic.

Dieseling is caused by too much throttle required to keep the engine running. This can be due to a engine needing a complete tuneup or bad carb settings or both. Apparently your tuneup was not complete or it would have been taken care of. Sounds like you need to take it back to whomever did the tuneup or at least adjust the carb and finish the tuneup yourself.
Don't just clean out the bowl. If it's that bad, go ahead and rebuild the entire thing. Especially if you've got off-idle hesitation. That could be blocked transfer slots or a failing accelerator pump. Sometimes, opening up a carb that needs a rebuild without actually rebuilding it will just make things worse because you loosen up things that would have otherwise stayed put.
It could be timing too, like you asked, but the only way to find out is to look at it with a light. It doesn't sound like the tuneup turned out very well.
I agree with what was said about why you're dieseling. Your idle is probably too high.
Have you done a compression check? I would check the valves. Take the air cleaner off, rev it up real quick and shut it of. How long does it take to turn off? Any smoke or flame come out? It could be the carb, but in my experience dieseling is from a bad valve. Is it a smog engine? (Known for burnning valves.)
